Business Change: The Difference Between Change Agents and Subject Matter Experts in Organization Change

When it comes to business change endeavors, change agents are frequently employed as external consultants. This can be done due to staffing issues, prior failures in change initiatives, or because senior management wanted an expert on change management involved with the process. This decision could be beneficial to the company and could result to improved efficiency and productivity which could in turn lead to success. Change agents, however, are not subject matter experts, despite all their expertise. Because they are hired by many corporations, it’s quite hard for a change agent to be an expert in every single detail of every business that they work for. For a business change to be successful, they often require a subject matter expert.

The change agent’s role is to handle the parts of the project that are included in their range of expertise. This may include coming up with new procedures for evaluation, developing channels of communication so all parties have a smooth way of passing information with each other, or seeing to it that the internal staff is on task with the change project. Change agents have one other primary role and that is to make certain that there are subject matter experts on hand if ever and whenever their input is necessary.

Because they are not experts on change, subject matter experts are normally under-qualified to handle business change endeavors. They are not in the position or capacity to develop the business change proposal. Technical experts can be kind of cranky at times and this is often why they find themselves excluded from the whole process of business change. This is not a good thing. They should be brought in to vet any technical aspects of the proposal. For instance, they will be aware of everything about the competition, relevant patents, and other technologies that is used by the business. This places them in a position where they could offer lots of technical input and make technical choices for an improved overall success rate.

A useful idea to keep in mind when a business change is at hand is that business is about business. For a successful business change, someone with a high level of expertise is needed. And this person with a high level of expertise is not the change agent, it’s the subject matter expert.
