The Challenges And Problems You Must Cope With To Become An Author, And The Many Varieties Of Genres You Can Write For.

July 29th, 2010 · Writing and Speaking

Of all the New careers that are offered out there for people to pick from, becoming an author can at times be one of the most challenging careers to get into. It is indeed tough to become successful enough to make a living from writing, however for a lot of people this remains an objective for them. When people are hunting for New careers, if they have an interest in books, it can really be tempting to go for it and attempt to start a New career as a recognised author. Here I am going to look at some of the problems faced by people when they try to be an author, and also take a look at some of the other various Careers which are available to people looking to write for a living.

One of the biggest difficulties faced by promising authors is the sheer competitiveness of this industry, particularly when writing fictional pieces. Even authors with a true ability will find themselves turned away loads of times before being accepted by a publisher, and even once they have been accepted they may find that they are asked to make changes and alterations to their writing in order to be accepted. They secret to being accepted is determination, you just need to keep at it, and not lose focus, eventually someone, somewhere will see your talent and accept your manuscript. Writing children’s books is particularly difficult, as it is by far the most competitive genre to write in. If you are wanting a New career as an author, you need to plan ahead vigilantly if you wish to make your first steps into children’s books, as it’s such a difficult market to break, you may have a harder time getting noticed as a new author, even if your books are very well written and presented.

There are other Careers available to writers which, while they don’t involve writing and developing an entire book and story, they do allow for people to establish a name for themselves, and acquire themselves some writing experience. This is always advantageous when looking to get your own work published, as publishers will always look approvingly on someone who has already acquired a bit of a name for themselves. The ever expanding popularity of the internet is making this easier for people, as people can start out writing their own blogs, or writing on a volunteer basis for websites. One particular website asking for volunteers to write weekly articles recently was The Sixth Axis, a popular website committed to gaming news and reviews. It can be very advantageous to people to gain work experience like this prior to trying to get their own work published.

Now we have only really glanced into getting fictional work published, however of course there are other genres for writers to write in. These different genres each present their own problems. For example, you may hope to publish a book on facts about a historical event. This in itself can be difficult, as unless you are supplying a new look on such an event, chances are it has already been covered. However, the same rule applies to this genre as well, if you persist at it, and your work is good enough, you will be recognised eventually.
